A Night, After All
(India)
A retired couple, one sleepless night, a game played, a question asked, a decision pending and a life hanging. Is it right to sacrifice everything? Is it wrong to not do the same? Can a caregiver be tired of giving?
“a night, after all” is a story of a night which is dark, terrifying, lonely yet warm and full of love. Love which exists between its characters that we see and the ones we do not.
Supriya and Kishore are two souls in the twilight of their lives, Supriya being a retired teacher and her husband Kishore a retired railway’s officer. Having lived a quiet life in various cities over various transfers, they are now settled in their own house.
But there is someone else who is a part of their life now. Bittu, the 19 year old daughter of Supriya’s elder sister is living with them. Her presence in their life creates a dilemma they both are unable to solve.
The story unfolds as the night progresses, sharing with us the vulnerabilities of the human heart, how it falls prey to attachment, and asks us to think about the meaning of sacrifice.

Babel to Abstraction
(United Kingdom)
An inventive exploration of the life and work of one of Asia’s pioneers of Abstract Art – George Claessen. Born into a family of Eurasian Dutch Burghers in colonial Ceylon, Claessen’s life spanned the twentieth century and entangled with many of its most compelling themes: colonialism, decolonisation, identity, migration, Cold War politics and the Artist’s quest for Truth and Beauty amidst the existential Battle against Rejection that all creators face.
Although legendary in his native land and lavishly praised by leading post-war European art critics including John Berger and George Besson, Claessen remains long neglected in his adopted country of Britain. For decades he was forced to pursue a lonely career as a humble company draughtsman while creating at night the prodigious body of work that is only now beginning to be recognised for its depth and intensity of vision.
The film features a revealing interview with Claessen, aged 83, filmed by his daughter Esmeralda not long before his death in 1999. Intertwining this precious archive with a wealth of material – including innovative animation and reworkings of the 1934 documentary classic ‘Song of Ceylon’ - from colonial South Asia and post-war London, the film’s heart is a dazzling showcase of vibrant abstract art. The film also includes extracts from letters, journals and readings of Claessen’s poetry.
George’s remarkable life story and journey are amplified through interviews with his daughter Esmeralda, his biographer Shamil Wanigaratne and his friend the veteran experimental composer Frank Denyer.
Denyer’s music – live and recorded – provides a haunting and surprising soundtrack to the story of an artist who, for seven decades, struggled – often unrecognised - to produce what the Guardian’s 1960s art critic GM Butcher called “precise renditions of that state of Being which is beyond Appearance”.

Oursoin, Fel and Kira are young directors. They decide to retreat to an island to write three screenplays. The sea is rough and the ferry wobbles. A strong wind comes between Oursoin and his cigarette, just as the confusion in his head is preventing him from developing an idea for his film. Once they reach their destination, the three directors immediately get to work. Lulled by the sound of the rain, Kira and Fel fall into a deep and unexpected sleep. The blockade of Oursoin remains, like the pounding of the rain. Discouraged by his blank sheet of paper, he can't resist the temptation to snoop through his classmates' notes. But he too is struck by a sudden sleep. Slowly the sound of the rain fades away. Oursoin wakes up, it seems like spring. The rain is no longer there and with it Kira and Fel have also disappeared. The director sees a silhouette in the distance. It's Kira. Oursoin believes his friend is not working on his film. But Kira is doing it by drawing, she believes that writing filters ideas incorrectly and that drawing is a more effective medium. Oursoin asks where Fel is. Kira directs him towards the horizon. When he arrives at the beach he finds Fel. Here Oursoin is put to the test of whether he understood his duty as a director. Slowly, as the bubbles of a breath exhaled in the recent past rise to the surface, the answer begins to clear up among Oursoin's tangled ideas: “The first duty of a director is to give importance to the soul of the spectator”. Oursoin was actually put on trial, the sentence of which is now announced by Fel: the accused is perfectly capable of writing his film. Confused, the director turns his gaze to the increasingly dark sky. When he wakes up it is night and still raining. He lights a candle and runs to get two blankets to wrap Fel and Kira in, who continue to sleep peacefully. Finally he takes pen and paper and starts writing.

Swaggg
(India)
In 1500s, a matrilineal kingdom being ruled by a dominant queen who suppresses males is cunningly taken over by her husband, a dominant male who now becomes the king and wants to suppress females in return. The king claims that he brought patrilineal society into existence, the one which we are enjoying now.
To ensure the matrilineal rule doesn’t get back, starting from his dynasty, he brings in the concept of registering his heirs into his patrilineal family tree. The duty of registering heirs in every generation is given to the dynasty of the head minister of the court. Failing to do so would attract a curse that doesn’t let male heir to be born in the minister’s dynasty anymore. The heirship comes along with huge chest of treasure that is guarded by minister’s dynasty.
The king’s dynasty goes forward without any issue till 1970s and so does the minister’s dynasty. A peculiar situation of twin males being born in the dynasty then, creates a hurdle. One male goes out of the dynasty for adoption and the other male who remained in the dynasty choosing to change his gender to female, brings the inheritance to a halt.
Oblivious to this fact, the minister’s dynasty in the current period i.e 2024 will still be on a look out for the heir to the kings treasure. Keeping the curse in mind, they ought to find the male heir and register into the family tree at any cost to take their own respective dynasty forward by getting a male kid.
As a result, a staunch feminist who feels females have every right like males do and a male chauvinist who feels females are better ignored, happen to become the possible heirs to the treasure in this generation.
The current society which is prevalent with liberal female mindset as well as dominant male mindset plays the main part in the story which also opens itself to the other gender, the Trans Gender, who happens to be the actual heir of the dynasty and the treasure.
How will the game between these three genders progress, who is dominated by who and how long should this Gender Dominance continue, forms the rest of the story.
The third gender is given a prominent and dignified part in the story. Above all, the story brings in the significance of Sanatana Dharma, with some Puranic anecdotes quoting the rich and everlasting culture of India that has always been inclusive of many societal components like Gender. In contrary to the current generations opinion that LGBTQ+ has been a concept of the west, the story tries to emphasise that India has always been rightly progressive in many ways for not just thousands of years but yugas together.
